How To Replace Range Hood Light Bulb

Range hoods are designed to remove grease from cooking food. They also provide ventilation to prevent smoke or odors from building up inside the kitchen.

They usually come with lights that you can either turn on manually or that turn on automatically.

However, range hood lights can burn out over time. If yours has burned out, you'll want to replace them so that you can continue cooking without having to worry about the light.

If you are interested in replacing your range hood light but are not sure how to do so, you've come to the right place.

We have created an easy step-by-step guide to ensure that you are able to easily replace a range hood light bulb yourself. This will save you money and help you avoid unnecessary service calls.

What Is A Range Hood Light?

A range hood is a device used for venting fumes and odors from kitchens. It consists of a fan that pulls air through vents located at the top of its body.

The fan then pushes this air into the kitchen where it's mixed with any grease or other particles that may be floating around. These particles are then sucked away by the fan and sent outside.

This process helps keep the kitchen clean and free of smoke and smells. The light in the range hood is also very important when you are cooking.

This light helps you to see the task you are doing clearly. It helps to see the food through any steam or smoke as the range hood works to get rid of it.

So when a range hood light breaks, it can be quite a nuisance when you are trying to cook.

How To Replace Range Hood Light Bulb

Now that we know what a range hood light bulb is and why they're needed, let's look at how to replace one.

What You Will Need

To replace a range hood light bulb you will need:

  • New Light Bulb
  • Pliers
  • Screwdriver
  • Suction cup

Step One

The first thing you will want to do is locate the switch for the range hood light. This is typically located near the front of the unit. Once you find the switch make sure to turn the switch off.

Step Two

Step Two

Next, you need to uncover the light bulb. Most range hoods will have the light bulb covered by some sort of plastic. This plastic might be clipped into the place, so for this type, you would need to unclip the cover so you can get to the light bulb.

However, you might find that your light bulb cover is screwed into place. If this is the case for your range hood, you need to use a screwdriver to remove the light cover so you can access the cover.

If you are replacing your light bulb because it had gone out when using the range hood, then make sure the light bulb and light bulb cover have cooled down before you change them.

This is to avoid accidentally burning yourself as some light bulbs can generate quite a bit of heat.

Step Three

Once you have removed the cover, you should now be able to see the light bulb. All you have to do at this point is simply unscrew the light bulb.

However, if you have a broken bulb or one that is recessed this might be slightly trickier. With a broken light bulb, you cannot simply remove it with your hands.

This is because the sharp shards of glass might scratch you and if the bulb is completely broken, there will be nothing to hold on to.

Instead, you should take some needle-point pliers and use them to remove the broken bulb. You will need to use the pliers to help you grip the base of the bulb that is screwed into the range hood. Then use the pliers to turn the light bulb until it unscrews.

If you have recessed lights then you will not be able to grab onto them to unscrew them.

This is because they are usually bulbs that have a flat top so they fit flush in the range hood. Instead, you will need to use a suction cup to grip these light bulbs.

Use the suction cup and place it in the middle of the light bulb. You may find that the suction cup does not stick to the bulb. This is usually because there is a layer of grease on your light bulb.

Wipe that layer of grease off of your light bulb and push the suction cup on the light bulb. Once it is stuck to the light bulb, slowly start unscrewing the bulb. This should remove the bulb with ease.

Step Four

Once you have removed the bulbs it is time to replace them. The new bulbs will come with instructions on how to install them.

Follow those directions carefully. When installing the new bulb, make sure to screw the bulb back into the same hole where it came from. Also, make sure to tighten the bulb enough so that the bulb stays securely in place.

It is important that when you are replacing a light bulb you try and get the exact same light bulb that went into the range hood. If this is not possible then you should get a light bulb that has the exact same wattage.

If you cannot find one that is the same wattage, then it is best to get one that is below. You should not get a light bulb that is above the recommended wattage.

After you've placed your light bulbs back in the range hood all you need to do is put on the cover and it should be working as it was before.

Final Thoughts

That is how you replace a light bulb in your range hood. It's really easy and does not take very long if you have all of the parts. Changing a light bulb has never been so simple.

If you are unsure of what light bulb to get then it is best to check with the manufacturer of your range hood.
